I will discuss the key ingredients for this program being successful. I want to reiterate the points because these distinctions will be the centerpiece of this program:

– Having a plan that is doable for even the busiest of people.
– Long-term perspective focusing on the person you will become and the results you achieve one year from now.
– Having a specific focus for 30 days at a time on a core building block of success, allowing us to focus on 12 individual core areas over the period of a year.
– Using weekly e-mail to bring continuity, accountability and synergy.
– Using supplemental audio programs and book chapters for listening in the car and reading at night.

Month One 

1. The Invitation: We looked at the possibilities and challenged you to accept the invitation to join together on this unique journey of self-development and discovery where you’ll set and reach higher goals, go for your dreams, change certain unpleasant things about yourself and make a significant difference in the lives of others. 

2. The Plan: we talked about the plan. All good things in life are upstream, but the natural flow of life is that downward, negative pull. To combat that downward pull, you need a plan, a map to help you reach your desired destination. We talked about the plan and considered the keys to creating and following a successful plan. 

3. Association and Influence: We are affected by everything around us, including what we read, what we watch, who we talk with and who we spend time with. It all plays a part in how we view our world, our relationships, our opportunities but mostly ourselves. Last week we discussed the importance of our associations and the influence they have. 

4. Learning and Education: over the next year we will be involved in personal development, becoming a student, and learning. This is the foundation: one of the basics or fundamentals to becoming more, to having more and to doing more, and we’ll cover this key aspect in this week’s edition. 

In Month Two: 

Evaluation and Reflection 
The only way we can reasonably decide what we want in the future and how we will get there is to first know where we are right now and what our level of satisfaction is for where we are in life. With our focus on goal-setting, the first order of business is for each of us to set aside some serious time for evaluation and reflection. 

Dreams and Goals 
What are your dreams and goals? Not related to the past or what you think you can get, but what you want. Have you ever really sat down, thought through your life values, and decided what you really want? This isn’t what someone else says you should have or what culture tells us successful people do or have. These are the dreams and goals born out of your own heart and mind, goals unique to you and that comes from who you were created to be and gifted to become. Does this seem a little daunting? Well, next week we will show you exactly how to discover what you want from life. 

SMART Goals 
SMART means Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-sensitive. 

Specific: Don’t be vague. Exactly what do you want? 
Measurable: Quantify your goal. How will you know if you’ve achieved it or not? 
Attainable: Be honest with yourself about what you can reasonably accomplish at this point in your life, while taking into consideration your current responsibilities. 
Realistic: It’s got to be doable, real and practical. 
Time: Associate a time frame with each goal. When should you complete the goal? 

Think of the word accountable. It means to give an account. When someone knows what your goals are, they help hold you accountable. Whether it is someone else going through this program with you (have you thought about inviting a friend to join you on this one-year journey?) or just someone you can give the basic idea to, having a person who can hold you accountable will give you another added boost to accomplishing your goals! In Week Eight, we will show you how to set up an accountability partner. 

Month Three: 

 1. Spiritual Health:  we looked at the benefits and importance of developing a vibrant spiritual life and gave you some easy methods to help take your spiritual life to a deeper level. 
2. Emotional Health: The mind, will, and emotions.  we covered the importance of a healthy soul, specifically the mind, will, and emotional aspects of life. We looked at how our inner person is such a vital part in making sure we live the kind of life we desire, and we learned how our emotional life can become healthy, strong, and lively. 
3. Physical Health—Nutrition:  We will begin a two-part look at the body and physical health, concentrating on the area of nutrition. It is important that we fuel our body properly because energy comes from the foods we eat. Just like a vehicle runs off of the fuel we fill it with, if we put the wrong kind of fuel into our body, it will not run properly. Put the right kinds of foods in, and it will run like the high-performance engine in an expensive sports car! 
4. Physical Health—Exercise: We will look at the important area of exercise. “I need to exercise” is the first thought that occurs to most people when they think of health. We do need exercise, and three weeks from now, we will take a more in-depth look at this important topic. 

Month Four 

Getting Out of Debt 
Debt is a killer. It is a killer of dreams and hopes. It is a killer of businesses. It is a killer of financial futures. And, according to statistics, debt plays a prominent role in many failed marriages. So what should we conclude from this? If we are to be successful, we must have a commitment to stay out of debt! You can make $2 million a year, but if you spend $2.5 million, it doesn’t matter how much money you made, does it? You will be saddled with debt. Today we address this issue. 

One of the key components to long-term wealth building is the discipline of saving money on a regular basis. Next week we will go through the basics and show how a commitment to saving money can revolutionize your financial life and provide the kind of security you desire. One simple difference between the philosophy of the rich and the poor is that the rich save/invest their money and spend what is left, while the poor spend their money and save/invest what is left. What a simple shift in our thinking for such a revolutionary result. We will talk about saving in next week’s edition. 

Investing is very different from saving. Investing involves risk—calculated risk—and the possibility for much more reward. Saving and investing are done for different reasons and with different desired goals and outcomes. By taking a portion of our income and turning it into capital to be invested, we will be actively working toward our goal of financial independence. We will cover the importance of investing, along with some basics of investing in two weeks. 

Giving a portion of your resources away is one of the most powerful principles you will ever embrace. It seems counterintuitive, but the truth is that giving will help you achieve the financial freedom you desire. Amazingly, giving makes you bigger than you are. The more you pour out, the more life will be able to pour back in. So giving a percentage of your resources away will help you not only have more money, but enjoy it more as well, and that is the best benefit. 

Month Five 

Basics of Healthy Relationships. There are certain fundamentals that, if mastered, will take you down the road of healthy relationships. The key to understanding relationships is that relationships involve people. And while every person is different, there are general principles that make most people tick. If we understand these basics or fundamentals and operate accordingly, we can make our bad relationships good and our good relationships great. We covered these basics two weeks ago. 

Family and Spousal Relationships. The primary relationships most people have are with their family. Yes, that wonderful enigma we call family, those deep and meaningful relationships that can bring the highlights—and the lowlights—of life. That group of people, many of whom we didn’t even get to choose, who will walk through this life with us. Your family relationships must be cultivated like a garden. Time, effort and imagination must be summoned constantly to keep any relationship growing and flourishing. We discussed how to have great family and spousal relationships last week. 

Friendships. Second to family, friends are the most important relationships we have. Friendships are unique because they are the relationships, we have that are almost entirely voluntary. You don’t get to choose your parents or your siblings, but you do get to choose your friends. So many times, we find these relationships provide matchless dynamics not found in our other relationships. These can, in their own special way, enhance our other relationships, making these friendships especially unique. We will take a deeper look into successful friendships this week. 

Business Relationships. Many people don’t understand how powerful relationships are in business. You’ve heard me say it before, but you cannot succeed by yourself. It is hard to find a rich hermit. So many times, we underestimate this unique dynamic and the potential it has to take us to new levels in our businesses. We may understand that family and friends are about relationships, but mistakenly think “business is business.” The fact is, even in business, relationships rule. Think for a moment about two salespeople: one is a friend and one you’ve never met. When it comes right down to it, you are most likely to buy from the one you know. That is the foundation of relationships. Next week, we will look at how to have great business relationships. 

Month Six 

1. Developing a Philosophy of Time ManagementEstablishing your priorities and values. As important as how to manage our time is first and foremost the why, since the why is the force that pulls us toward our dreams and determines the how. First, we’ll look at the philosophy of time management and then determine our priorities based on the values we believe in and hold in the highest. We will discuss these things more in depth later on in this edition. 

2. Creating a Proactive ScheduleAllocating time based on your unique priorities and values. Once you know why you are managing your time and the priorities and values you strive for, then it is important to understand where you currently spend your time and how to strategically budget for maximum performance. You see, something will always master and something will always serve. Either you run the day or it runs you. Next week we will look deeper into this aspect of time management. 

3. Breaking Through BarriersEliminating time wasters and overcoming procrastination. Many folks know what to do, but it is often the things we shouldn’t spend our time on that get us off track. It’s important that we not mistake movement for achievement. It’s easy to get tricked by being busy, but the key question is: Busy doing what? In two weeks, we will look at how to overcome procrastination and eliminate time wasters. 

4. How to Gain More TimeWe’ll talk about time-management pointers and how to reclaim one to two hours a day through delegating, skill improvement, multitasking and improved focus. These are things anyone can do to gain more time in their day. Yes, there are only 24 hours in each day, but we can maximize those hours by working “smarter” rather than longer, and employing other skills along with our time management. We will look at these ideas in three weeks. 

Month Seven 

1. Developing the Attitude for Networking (and life). The old saying is true that your “attitude determines your altitude.” You will only go as far as your attitude will carry you. We looked at the kind of attitudes that enable you to successfully expand your network and make your life all that it can be. There are certain attitudes you must have toward circumstances and those that you must have toward yourself and others. Your attitude also governs the process of what takes place when you are networking. We discussed attitude three weeks ago. 

2. Becoming a Person of Influence. The ability to attract and influence others is paramount to being a successful networker. We covered the principles of influence and what motivates others to follow your lead, which, in turn, builds your network. We also discussed how to expand your contact list with people who want to go with you to greater heights. We covered this in detail two weeks ago. 

3. Working your Network. It takes a certain skill to search for and gain new referrals in order to expand your business. We showed you how to develop your network and grow your business—what to do before the meeting, during the meeting and after the meeting, all designed to help you grow your business through an expanding network of people. We covered this in last week’s edition. 

4. Getting the Referral. The success of your business depends on keeping your current customers satisfied while at the same time gaining new customers. The key to getting new customers is getting a referral. In this week’s edition, we will discuss a technique for this and cover the ins and outs of working with people in such a way that they help you find others to grow your business—and gladly refer you! 

Month Eight 

1. Attitudes of Successful Salespeople: The profession, setting your goals, attitudes of successful salespeople and getting and staying motivated. This is the basic overview of the profession of selling. Selling is a noble occupation, even though some people might think otherwise. In fact, we are all in sales. We are selling people every day. In addition, our attitude as well as getting and staying motivated are vitally important and will make or break a salesperson. We covered this at the beginning of the month. 

2. Prospecting. Sales and success is a numbers game. I will covered the importance of and how to get in front of a large number of people to close a higher percentage of sales calls. I also showed you the importance of “knowing your stuff”—what you need to know about you, your prospect and your product. Then, we looked briefly at the importance of understanding how to sell to different personality types. 

3. Building relationships that position you as an educator/consultant to your clients. In last week’s edition, I touched on listening skills and making the sale. We also looked at the all-important issue of relationships. Relationships are in selling, as in life, the most important factor. We don’t sell to companies; we sell to people! People always make the decisions. We looked at how to be a great listener and also discussed how to reposition yourself from being known as a salesperson to being seen as an educator and consultant who helps people make the best buying decisions. 

4. Getting referrals/Negotiation skills. This week, I will take a look at how to get referrals so your business is ever-expanding. That is the key to a successful sales business—the ever-expanding network of people to draw sales from. I will also cover the basics of negotiation. This will have an emphasis on how to get both sides into a winning position so they can be happy with the sale. I will give you specific skills to get into win-win negotiations. 

Month Nine: 

1. Fundamentals of Effective Communication and Overcoming the Obstacles of Communication. A few weeks ago, I covered the basics of communication so you can say it well. This lays the groundwork for everything else I talk about this month. We also covered those obstacles that might get between you and effective communication. 

2. Improving Relationship and Business Communications. I will cover the two basic kinds of communication: business communications and our everyday relationship communications. In this week’s edition, I will look at how to improve both, so we can excel and enjoy every area of our life. 

3. Verbal and Nonverbal Communication and Listening Skills. Last week, I will cover the two kinds of communication I use and how to better use them. Most of us are aware of our verbal communication but less so of our nonverbal communication. I will also take a look at how to be a better listener and why it pays to do so. I already cover this in last week’s edition. 

4. The Essentials of Powerful and Effective Presentations and Using Communication to Further Your Dreams. This covers all you need to become a better speaker for when you are called upon to give a presentation. Whether you present once a year or once a week, the tips you get here will make a big difference. We will also cover how communication plays a significant role in the pursuit and achievement of your dreams—all of this today. 

Month Ten: 

1. The Foundational Principles of Leadership and Developing a Powerful Vision. In today’s lesson, I will cover the basic foundational elements that are central to becoming a person with tremendous leadership skills and abilities. I will also discuss secrets to having a powerful and compelling vision that helps you attract others. 

2. Character: The Core of Leadership and Leadership Mistakes to Avoid. Next week, I will be looking at what I believe is the core element of what it means to be a leader: the issue of character. I will look at what it means to be a person of character who can lead others forward, and how a character is essential to successfully lead others. I will also look at some typical leadership mistakes people make that hinder their ability to lead and move their organizations forward, and how you can avoid making those same mistakes. 

3. Skills Needed for Effective Leadership and Developing Other Leaders in Your Organization. In two weeks, I will turn our eyes away from the character traits of leaders and look more at the basic skills that effective leaders demonstrate. I will also be looking at some strategic ways to develop other leaders around you so you can ensure a new generation of leaders. 

4. Becoming the Best Leader You Can Be—Taking Care of Yourself as the Leader and Motivating Those Who Follow You—In Good Times and Tough Times. In the last week of this month, I will take a closer look at making sure that you take care of yourself. In this day and age, it is even more important for the leader to closely guard their own growth and development. I will also look at how to motivate others to follow you. 

Month Eleven: 

1. You Are a Genius! This week, I discuss ways to unlock and tap into the incredible and powerful potential in your mind. We will also cover the attitudes of successful learners and show how your attitude about learning will determine how far you go in your life and career. 

2. Six Stages of Learning. Next week, I will talk about how to accelerate your learning and discover what your unique learning strengths and weaknesses are. I will also cover the topic of finding your particular learning style, and how to best tailor your learning to fit your unique needs. 

3. Improve Your Memory. In two weeks, I will talk about how the mind and memory work and how to train yourself to remember more. I will also cover basic speed-reading techniques and show you the importance of reading and how to develop a basic reading plan. 

4. Lifelong Learning. In Week Four, I will discuss the importance and benefits of being a lifetime learner. In addition, I will talk briefly about a basic plan for lifelong learning and how to keep your mind tuned for success, as well as how to win the battles of thought that take place in our minds. 

Month Twelve:  

1. A Life Well-Lived. This month’s first week I will cover the importance of leaving a legacy of a life well-lived. I will see how our lives impact all those who follow us. I will also introduce the topics we will review later in the month. 

2. Principles to Live By. In Week Two, I will cover key principles to live by that will help you leave a legacy. These will be the foundations of a life that leaves an impact on others. The principles I live by are the basis for the kind of legacy I will leave behind. I will also begin our how-tos by looking at how to leave a relational legacy. All of life is based on relationships, and we choose what direction those relationships go. We can live our lives in such a way that when we are gone, people are impacted by the relational legacy we left behind. 
3. The Importance of a Spiritual Legacy and an Impact Legacy. Week Three I will cover both how to leave a spiritual legacy as well as how to leave an “impact legacy.” The core of who we are as individuals is spiritual. We were created with the intention of relating to God through our spiritual life. One of the greatest gifts we can leave behind is a spiritual example and legacy. We will also talk about how to leave a life legacy that impacts people. There are those who live on this earth and then just disappear, leaving little more than a trace. And then there are others who, through their legacy, live on in others for years to come. We will talk about how to be the latter. 
4. Financial Legacy. In Week Four, we will look at leaving a business legacy, a financial legacy, and a family legacy. We will see how the businesses we operate have a deeper impact than we might have imagined. We will talk about establishing a strong financial base that will provide for others long term. We will also look at one of the most important aspects of legacy, those we touch most deeply: our family.
